Dr. Sue Horowitz LIBERTY: Theatre Review by Dr. Sue Horowitz www.drsue.com

Liberty: A Monumental Musical sculpts a touching, tuneful tale about the most famous immigrant to grace New York harbor - Lady Liberty herself.

Like her fellow minorities,  the one-of-a-kind Ms. Liberty struggles to find acceptance and suffers from prejudice and rejection. Her story may be fantasy, but it conveys a deep and heart-felt truth.  As Emma Lazarus' poem at  the base of the statue suggests, we are all "huddled masses yearning to breathe free" and we need a "lamp beside the golden door."

The statue (by Bartholdi ) was a gift from France in 1885, intended to celebrate Franco-American friendship and shared democratic ideals,  but the U.S. reneged on its promise and cut funding for the pedestal.

The statuesque Ms. Liberty is brought to life by a petite teenager with a full-sized talent - a young immigrant played by the sweetly vulnerable Abigail Shapiro. A snobbish millionaire (Cheryl Stern) backs a self-aggrandizing politician (Ben McHugh), who campaigns against Liberty's message of welcome to immigrants: an  Italian boy (Andre Ditsua) tutored by Emma Lazarus (Emma Rosenthal),  and a Jewish peddler (also played by Stern) who duets  in a comic turn "We Had It Worse" with an Irish foreman (Tom Souhrada).  Souhadra also plays Pulitzer, who owns The World - the newspaper that puts Lazarus' Liberty-inspired poem "The New Colossus" on the front page - plus a list of contributors to the pedestal fund.

Playwright/Lyricist Dana Leslie Goldstein and Composer Jon Goldstein bring the story and message of diversity up-to-date by including a Native-American iron worker (Ryan Duncan) and African-American (C. Mingo Long), who sings the heart-wrenching "More."

Director Evan Pappas steers this ship of immigrants with imagination and empathy, compressing a large saga onto a a small stage - Theatre 80 (80 Saint Marks Place) through November 25.  http://libertythemusical.com/

Producers Timothy Harper and Theresa Wozunk  (a former professional dancer who was associate producer for The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess) helm this project (inspired by Wozunk's grandfather, who taught himself English by reading American newspapers).  Their creative team and terrific cast truly do a monumental job!
